Cleaners Strike at John Lewis

Oxford St, London. Fri 13 Jul 2012

The cleaners had started their official picket at John Lewis at 5.30am, but I only went to the lunchtime rally in support of them

Their one day strike was the first strike ever at the John Lewis Partnership formed over 90 years ago

The want to be treated on the same basis as the other workers in the store - as 'partners'

and to have decent working conditions and be treated as people- they say the management "treats them like bacteria"

John Lewis gets another company, Integrated Cleaning Management (ICM), to employ its cleaners

in an attempt to disown its responsibilities towards them as workers in the store.

Several trade unionists came to give their support

Although some union hierarchies are against the IWW they get support from the rank and file who see them as an active and campaigning organisation
