10 Years of Resistance to Phulbari

Stock Exchange, London. Fri 26 Aug 2016

Protesters outside the Stock Exchange call for plans for an open pit coal mine at Phulbari to be dropped

The mine would displace 130,000 farming families, destroy 14,600 hectares of fertile land, threaten clean water resources

and have a devastating impact on one of the world’s largest mangrove forests and UNESCO heritage site, the Sunderbans

Coal and flowers on a banner remembering the 3 villagers killed during a mass protest in 2006

A police officer tries to get the banner moved so as not to obstruct the pavement

Malaysian business magnate Michael Tang is the executive chairman of the Board of Directors

and Gary Lye the CEO of British company, Global Coal Resources Management

The protesters call on the Stock Exchange to delist GCM

candles are lit for the three villagers killed, and there was a two minute silence

After the silence came drumming

and speeches and shouting of slogans

I had to leave but the protest was continuing
