Three Mills & Stratford

London. Thu 2 Mar 2017

North from Twelvetrees Crescent a private bridge leads into the gasworks site

Lea Navigation at left and the tidal River Lea (Bow Creek) at right

Three Mills seen under the railway bridges

Two channels of the tidal river merge here

Three Mills - a tide mill dating from 1776 (though on the site of earlier tide mills mentioned in the Domesday Book)

on the Three Mills Wall River. The largest tide mill in the UK and the largest surviving in Europe

 if not the world.

Part of the site was Nicholson's Brewery, and behind the building on the right is Three Mills TV studio

High water above the mill - and a risk of flooding

a huge area by Sugar Mill Lane is currently being redeveloped

Another sculpture on Short Wall by by Alec Peever in Three Mills Green is a memorial to Distillery workers killed in 1901.
Unveiled on the centenary it was moved to this position recently. Three men died going to the aid of a fourth who had been overcome by the lack of oxygen at the bottom of a well they were investigating.

A dam keeps the water back from the channel where boats are moored
