Travellers evicted in Staines
Staines, Middx. Thu 17 Aug 2017
Apart from some slight wear on the grass the field was in excellent
condition
The travellers were happy to talk to me but asked me not to photograph
their children or business vans
They had agreed to leave peacefully after talking with bailiffs who
had told them them would otherwise be forcibly removed
and were packing up as I walked around
Police officers were standing around outside but doing nothing
Bailiffs employed by GRC come towards me to remove me from the site,
which is pubicly owned land
Neither the bailiffs nor the Surrey Law enforcement officers would
answer any questions - and told me I couldn't take photographs
The bailiffs had brought a couple of lorries to remove the vanis from
the site if necessary.
Bailiffs had blocked the site entrances - and shouted at me to 'F**k
off!' as I took some pictures
The travellers had not caused any problems during the couple of weeks they
were on the field, which is seldom used
and there seemed to be no reason to use the doubtfully legal method to evict
them.
The previous day a court had refused to grant the council the legal power
to evict the travellers who say that the
council had failed to give proper consideration to the welfare of the children
and other matters. .
