Focus E15 was formed when young mothers staying at the Focus E15 hostel
in Stratford were told they would be
evicted and the hostel closed. Newham council told them they would
have to move into private rented accomodation
away from friends, families, nurseries and jobs hundreds of miles
away. They decided to fight the council.
Focus E15 run a street stall on housing every Saturday in Stratford
giving advice to others who need help
and have prevented a number of evictions and forced Newham to rehouse
themselves and others in London
rather than in Liverpool, Hastings or Cardiff. They have supported
housing campaigns in other boroughs and
appeared at national conferences, and on videos and in plays, as well
as contributing to plays by others.
They have kept going despite threats and physical assaults from Newham
council - Sir Robin had to apologise
to them in 2014. As well as the young mothers (and some of their families)
Focus E15 hasbeen supported by
activists from the left both as members and supporters of their various
protests.
A man from Policy Exchange brought out a kettle of hot water with
cups and tea bags. Some refused to drink it
but others like me were cold and wet and it was very welcome.
At the end of their protest outside, the group decided to try and
go in to the conference to protest, but as I
expected were stopped before they got to it by the building's security staff.
By then I had left to cover another protest.
