No Justice for Grenfell
Kensington & Chelsea Town Hall, London. Wed 26 Jun 2019
The Revolutionary Communist Group had set up their table at the bottom
of the Town Hall steps
while another left group was making a noisy protest at the top of
them
The Workers Revolutionary Party protesters
The RCG came to invite the WRP to join them and speak at their PA
system
but they refused, although both groups were protesting against the
council's failures over Grenfell
The RCG begin their protest - and have a great banner 'Housing is
a Right - Not A Privilege'
There is some loud chanting and several short speeched
The banner is by Andrew - at right here
The main speaker was Simon Elmer of Architects for Social Housing.
They produced a detailed report on
Grenfell within a few weeks of the tragic fire which made clear that
a disaster was virtually inevitable, and it was
only a matter of time before it happened. Their report made clear
the various people and groups who were at fault
and although a few more details have emerged is almost certainly more
definitive than anything the official
inquiry will produce. Simon Elmer talked about a similar incident
in Japan, where criminal charges had been
brought only a month after the fire, while two years after Grenfell
there have been none.
The response by our government, local government, police and legal
system seems designed to prevent anyone
having to take the blame and to frustrate the changes that are needed
in building and fire regulations, and to
avoid proper action to support the survivors.
Others were invited to speak at the open mike - and there was support
for Grenfell from Focus E15.
People were having to leave and those still there posed for a picture
on the council steps
I left as those still present were deciding whether to bring this protest
to an end or continue longer
