Yorkshire Dales holiday

Bolton Castle

We could see the castle from miles away, and as we got closer I managed a picture through the car window

Despite being part ruined, the castle is still impressive

and there is quite a lot of the interior still in one piece, with some sympathetic furnishig. You get a useful map

of the castle, and as we expected the weather to break I decided to go towards the upper floors first

At the west end there are quite a few rooms, mainly fairly empty

 This was the nursery

 a rather fine wall hanging

This room was where Mary Queen of Scots was held. She had over 50 staff with her

I think this is from near the South West corner

Looking roughly east. It was getting very windy up here, on the north-east tower and there was the occasional spit of rain

 Looking towards the east

 and south

We went down to the bottom of the castle

The vineyard was on the south side

 and there was a maze

It didn't take me too long to get to the centre, and I soon managed to escape

by now it was getting seriously cold and windswept and we retreated to the cars
