Yorkshire Dales holiday

Linton Church, Falls and Village

Some of the group go to morning service in the busy church at Linton

but I walk past and go on

to the stepping stones across the River Wharfe

but decide the water is too high for me to cross

quite a few of the stones are under water

and I can't see them close to the other bank

I walk past a finely carved stone in the Churchyard

This house was I think for the mill manager at Linton. The mill has been replaced by modern housing in keeping with the area

Quite a few people cross the footbridge and some stop to look. The falls are much quieter than on my previous visit

but the water still flows down fiercely

Upstream is the hydroelectric power station

and I walk along the far bank towards it

spotting a large bird, which I'm told is a cormorant

The power station had gone out of service by 1949 but has recently been restored and again produces powe

I walk a few yards up the walled path towards Grassington

but then come back and see if I can photograph the falls from this bank

It isn't easy but there are glimpses through the trees

I wander up the hill above the church and get a good view of the sewage works

After the others come out of church we drive into the village, about half a mile away

A large village green is dominated by the Fountaine Hospital Almshouse built in 1813 and still in its original use

An attractive bridge spans the stream

and a little way down are some stepping stones to a house gate marked 'PRIVATE'
