Yorkshire Dales holiday

Conistone walk

The former chapel at Conistone is still owned and used by the Methodist church but as a hostel

St Mary Conistone, a small but very old chapel

 The nearer arch is Norman

A rather curious monument in the churchyard

We go back to the car for people to change into walking boots, then go back past the church to walk up a byway

as we get higher there are extensive views

We are on the track, Scot Gate Lane, which leads across the moors to Mossdale, the site of the UK's worst

caving accident where six men were killed by rising water back in 1967. Remebrance services are held in the

 church at Coniston.

Eventuall we meet the Dales Way, but our route back to Conistone is down a narrow gulch to the right, just

by the gate. It starts close to vertical but after a while flattens out

though it is still quite steep and very stony

 It gets flatter and grassy

but ahead is an area of scree

and past that the path disappears down a narrow gap

 filled with broken rock

A narrow path has been smoothed over the years by water but is dry now

and the path continues between high rock walls

eventually the sides become less steep and grassed and we can see roofs ahead

and we are almost back in Conistone
