Clean Air for Catford Children

Catford, London. Sat 21 Sep 2019

The Corbett Community Centre in the Corbett Library in Catford

Archibald Cameron Corbett, born in Glasgow was a politician and philanthropist who built the Hither Green Estate with high quality homes for middle

class and skilled working class tenants. As well as houses he built shops, churches, schools and recreation grounds

and, in 1907, this library. Everything the people needed but alcohol, as he was a committed to the temperance movement.

Children and adults had spent the afternoon makeing posters and placards for the protest.

and the came out ready for the march.

Eventually people came out for the march onto Torridon Road, walking along the pavement. The march became

very spread out because of this.

The march turned onto Brownhill Road, a busy stretch of the South Circular route, where heavy traffic and

congestion make this one of the most polluted areas of London.

'The Air I Breathe Shouldn't Kill Me'. But London's polluted air is responsible for around 10,000 deaths every year
